The word food doesn't refer to just anything that you eat. Foods are those edible substances that can provide your body with certain kinds of nutrients, like proteins, fat, fiber, carbohydrates, and different kinds of vitamins and minerals.

The stomach has limited space and should only be filled with foods that are rich in essential nutrients, and are therefore beneficial for the growth and development of human brain and body. In the marketplaces today, designer foods are offered to consumers with extra nutrients added to increase their value, and also to serve specific health purposes. Most people in developed countries today are quite conscious about exactly what they eat, and make sure that a large amount of fiber is present in their regular diet. According to a study almost one third of the population surveyed indicated they actively try to add more fiber to their diets while half the population surveyed actively try to include more omega-3 fatty acids through their diet. According to a survey done among 1,000 Americans in 2005, at least 83% of the people showed interest in getting information about food that can provide human body with special health benefits and not just basic nutrients. Women, especially those who are pregnant, are also typically very conscious of their diets and replicate their preferences to their children.

The trend of incorporating additive nutrients into our food products isn’t new at all. Milk producers have been fortifying milk by adding extra vitamin D to it since the 1930s. Vitamin D helps prevent rickets in children, who are most vulnerable to this disease. For people who aren’t able to consume lactose, adding vitamin D to their diets is a problem. Recent technological innovations have, however, made it possible to add a lot of vitamin D to orange juice.

It’s not enough to simply consume a lot of nutrients through your food. You need to also care about the amount of nutrients you are consuming. For example, more than 2,000 milligrams of vitamin C per day in an adult human body can cause diarrhea and kidney stones. Stanols and plant sterols help reduce cholesterol inside one’s body, and 2 grams of these substances per day is enough to keep cholesterol in control. Ingesting more than that amount can harm the body and doesn’t provide any extra benefit. Iron is necessary for the growth of blood cells, but in some forms iron is not soluble is simply flushed out of the body.
